Code of Conduct

Purpose
- Define acceptable and unacceptable behavior within the community
- Establish clear expectations for all participants
- Provide a process for resolving conflicts and reporting issues
- Create a welcoming and inclusive environment for contributors of all backgrounds
Community Values
The FAIR community values openness, respect, collaboration, and inclusivity. We believe that a diverse and welcoming community produces better software and stronger outcomes for everyone involved. Every participant is expected to contribute to a positive and professional environment.
Statement of Intent
The FAIR project is committed to maintaining a harassment-free, inclusive community. We do not tolerate discrimination or exclusion in any form. This Code of Conduct applies to all participants and all project spaces, both online and in person.
Code Expectations
Participants must:
- Treat all individuals with respect and dignity
- Use welcoming and inclusive language
- Be considerate of differing viewpoints and experiences
- Accept constructive criticism gracefully
- Focus on what is best for the community
- Show empathy toward other community members
Scope
This Code of Conduct applies to all project spaces, including but not limited to: messages in community channels, email correspondence, web pages, code repositories, issue trackers, mailing lists, events, and any other forums created by the project that the community uses for communication.
Glossary
- Demeaning Behavior: Acting in a way that reduces another person's dignity, sense of self-worth, or respect within the community.
- Discrimination: Prejudicial treatment of an individual based on criteria such as physical appearance, race, ethnic origin, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, disability, or other protected characteristics.
- Insulting Behavior: Treating another person with scorn or disrespect, including name-calling, mockery, or belittling.
- Harassment: Any conduct directed at a specific person that causes substantial emotional distress and serves no legitimate purpose.
- Respect: Showing regard for the feelings, wishes, rights, and traditions of others.
- Sexual Harassment: Unwelcome sexual attention, including inappropriate comments, jokes, imagery, or physical contact.
- Workspace Bullying: Repeated mistreatment that threatens, humiliates, or intimidates, including verbal abuse, conduct that is threatening or humiliating, or sabotage that interferes with work.
- Unwelcome Behavior: Actions that a reasonable person would consider unwelcome, including those that are uninvited and cause discomfort, distress, or offense.
Incident Procedures
Reporting
To report a violation of this Code of Conduct, please contact manager@lfprojects.org. All reports will be treated confidentially and investigated promptly.
Appeals
If you believe a decision regarding a Code of Conduct incident was made in error, you may appeal by contacting the same address with additional context or information.
Enforcement Ladder
- Correction: A private, written notice providing clarity around the nature of the violation and an explanation of why the behavior was inappropriate. A public apology may be requested.
- Warning: A formal warning with consequences for continued behavior. No interaction with the people involved for a specified period. This includes avoiding interactions in community spaces as well as external channels. Violating these terms may lead to a temporary or permanent ban.
- Temporary Ban: A temporary ban from any sort of interaction or public communication with the community for a specified period. No public or private interaction with the people involved is allowed during this period. Violating these terms may lead to a permanent ban.
- Permanent Ban: A permanent ban from any sort of public interaction within the project community.

Positive Behaviors
- Using welcoming and inclusive language
- Being respectful of differing viewpoints and experiences
- Gracefully accepting constructive criticism
- Focusing on what is best for the community
- Showing empathy toward other community members
Unacceptable Behaviors
- The use of sexualized language or imagery and unwelcome sexual attention or advances
- Trolling, insulting or derogatory comments, and personal or political attacks
- Public or private harassment
- Publishing others' private information without explicit permission
- Other conduct which could reasonably be considered inappropriate in a professional setting
