FAIR Initiatives
FAIR's work is organized into working groups, each focused on a specific area of the project. The Technical Steering Committee (TSC) provides oversight and ensures alignment across all initiatives.
Governance
The FAIR Web Foundation operates as a Linux Foundation directed fund, providing neutral governance for the project. The TSC structure follows a triumvirate leadership model, ensuring balanced decision-making and representation across the community.
Supply Chain Security
Work is underway to identify and address risks and threats in the software supply chain. This initiative focuses on ensuring that packages distributed through the FAIR network meet security standards and that the distribution infrastructure itself is resilient against attacks.
FAIR Protocol
The FAIR Protocol is based on ATProto and W3C DID, providing the technical foundation for federated package distribution. The protocol specification and documentation are available on GitHub.
Trust Moderation (Labeling)
The trust moderation system is based on Bluesky's Ozone labeling framework, adapted for software package trust signals. This system enables communities to collaboratively assess and label packages for quality, security, and trustworthiness. Details are available in the moderation documentation.
Software
Multiple working groups are actively publishing software to support the FAIR ecosystem. All software is released under GPL v2+ or MIT license, ensuring broad compatibility and freedom. Visit the working groups page to learn more about each group's focus and contributions.
Community
Community engagement is a core part of FAIR's mission. The project participates in events, produces podcasts, and maintains active communication channels to keep contributors and users informed and connected.
AspirePress & FAIR
FAIR collaborates closely with AspirePress, which provides mirrored plugin repository infrastructure with transparent governance. The AspireCloud Working Group was formed in July 2025 to coordinate efforts between the two projects and ensure seamless integration of AspirePress infrastructure within the FAIR ecosystem.
